The Name Behind the Brand
"Bukulu" is the nickname of founder and designer Bethlehem Belete Meshesha, a name given by her mother and sister. It speaks to her mission of peace, creativity and self-expression.

Bukulu is an independent fashion and lifestyle brand founded by Bethlehem Belete Meshesha, a professionally trained fashion designer with more than 20 years of experience in fashion, visual design and creative development.

Every Bukulu design is developed in-house. Bethlehem creates the concepts, compositions, colour combinations and garment placement, drawing inspiration from Ethiopian heritage, Rastafari culture, the Lion of Judah, Haile Selassie I, African identity and reggae roots.

The artwork is not simply selected from a ready-made print catalogue. Each design is thoughtfully developed and adapted for the product it appears on, whether it is a T-shirt, sweatshirt, hat, wall decoration or all-over-print garment. Attention is given to scale, colour, positioning, fabric, seams and how the artwork will look when worn or displayed.

Some designs are bold cultural statements, while others use a more minimalist, black-on-black or contemporary streetwear approach. The goal is to create meaningful pieces that respect their cultural influences while offering original, modern fashion.

Bukulu works with professional print production partners to manufacture and fulfil the finished products, but the brand direction, artwork development and product presentation are created and managed by Bukulu.
